They'd been at it for a while now, and the game had taken on a rhythm all its own. The person who was up would make their move.

Van grinned. "I've never lived anywhere but California."

The other two would react, sometimes justify their answers, and drink if they had to.

Deaq lifted his glass and drank. "Aw, man. You know I lived in New York. So much for partners stickin' together. And what about you?" He looked over at Simone, who hadn't had to drink.

Usually, someone had a story to tell.

She shook her head. "I'm a California girl, through and through."

"I'll say. But what, no fancy boarding school?" Van asked.

"I kind of wanted to go away, but my father didn't like the idea." She paused, then said, "Okay, my turn."

Deaq rolled his eyes. "Oh, great. Here comes another 'hot oil treatment' one. You must like the taste of that drink, girl, 'cause you're playing to lose."

Simone smiled. "I've never... kissed a man." She took a drink.

Across the table from her, Van and Deaq both stared down at their drinks. Without looking up at her or over at each other--Van maybe a fraction of a second sooner--they reached out, picked up their glasses, and drank. This time, no one offered a justification or a story. They didn't say anything about it at all. They just moved on to Deaq's turn. After that, Deaq and Van sat a little closer together at the table, brushed up against each other more. None of them noticed.
